"...I feel like a walking medical experiment sometimes but it is all going to be worth it..."

From Nicole
kcameron@surfree.com (Riverton, UT) I read the newsletter every month.  I sit at my computer and cry.  I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones.  I thank God every day that my son is alive.  He was delivered by emergency C-section in May 2000 at 34.5 weeks.  I waited 5 days before finally going to the ER with severe liver pain (accompanied by vomiting, swelling, extremely high blood pressure).  I had called the Labor and Delivery at the hospital late one night when the symptoms first appeared and I was told it was gas.  I am grateful for my attentive midwife that forced me to go to the hospital to have my platelets and blood pressure checked.  I am pregnant again (18 weeks) with my second child.  I had a miscarriage last year (which my midwives swear was not HELLP related).  I get angry that HELLP has taken away some of the joy of pregnancy.  I am nervous and scared all the time.  I am hoping this pregnancy will be uneventful and have a positive outcome.  So far so good. My blood pressure has been great and we found out we are having a girl!  My current midwife has me taking a baby aspirin daily and she has encouraged me to take a calcium supplement too.  After following this website, I have seen that others have done the same.  Some feel it has no benefit, where others swear by it.  If anyone is in a similar situation or has any advice, please email me at kcameron@surfree.com

Michelle.Bertola@edwards.boc.com (Williamsville, NY) I am pregnant again after having severe HELLP, and delivering a 28-week preemie. I want to post it on the web for other members.

From Kim
mathesjk@msn.com (Midland, TX) Just a short note to let you know we're expecting our 2nd baby in September.  I developed HELLP at 26 weeks and Levi (now 2) was 1/7.5.  Although we're going through hell with Levi (autism, PVL, developmental delays galore, etc) we decided it was time for him to be a big brother.  So far, no bad stuff. Please pray for this baby.

tysmommy2001@hotmail.com (Martinsburg, WV) I just wanted to let you know that I am going to be mommy again. I have my first doctor's appointment Tues. He's a high risk Dr. and I have heard only good things about him.

From Jen
jralph01@adelphia.net (Hampstead, MD) I am writing an update that I have just found out I am about 7 weeks pregnant. I developed Pre-E at 23 weeks and then HELLP at 26 weeks with my last pregnancy, causing my daughter to be born 14 weeks early in April 2000. Now she is ready for a new brother or sister, and my husband and I were very shocked to find out one was on the way! I am a little nervous going into the pregnancy this time as I was told I had a 33% chance of getting HELLP again and a higher risk at Pre-E. I am trying to look at the odds as me having a 70% chance of NOT getting HELLP again and am reading up and looking for advice on keeping healthy. The best news is that I am being seen by the perinatal group who saved my life the last time, and I feel so safe and well looked after by them.

From Heather
heatheranntaylor@yahoo.com (Warwood, WV) Well I don't want to jinx myself but I am now 34.4 weeks pregnant.  This Friday is when I would have delivered Marshall and so far I am feeling great. This pregnancy has flown by because of our active 18 month old but so far so good.  I go to my doctor weekly and have since I was 30 weeks.  She does blood work every week and my platelets look really good.  I check my urine every morning and take my blood pressure.  I feel like a walking medical experiment sometimes but it is all going to be worth it.  We are going to be surprised again about the baby's gender so we'll see what the next few weeks bring. I feel really confident that all will go well.  I am hoping to attempt a VBAC if everything goes well but really all I want is a healthy baby.  Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers! Heather wrote in later ….. I had my 35 week appointment today and all looks good.  I am dilated a fingertip and 70% effaced.  The baby has begun to drop which is a good sign for the vaginal birth I hope to attempt.  They also did a nonstress test on the baby and He/She looks Great!!!  So far so good!!!!!

I am now 27 weeks pregnant. I had a bit of preterm labour this week but as long as I stay off my feet everything is okay. My platelets are down to 68 but that is okay with the doctors at this time. We are still only planning on going to 37 weeks so much longer to go. BP has started to rise but not too much and I am monitoring it at home.

Nathan James is doing very well with me being pregnant and is sort of looking forward to having this baby!! Jon is standing up very well with the added stress. Not sure how he will cope with the delivery but I am sure he will do fine with lots of support.
