From Joann jhardegger@hotmail.com Hi. I had HELLP syndrome in 1997. I am wondering if there have been follow-up studies or surveys done on women post HELLP say 5 years out. I am experiencing some vague and some not so vague symptoms and am interested to know if others are experiencing them also. Thank you.
From Vicki chambersonboard@hotmail.com (UK) First - thank you so much for your society and web site. An island in the storm, truly. I suffered with HELLP right at the end of my pregnancy last year but now my son is thriving and wonderful. I took some time to get my health back as it was pretty last minute stuff. The doctors here in the UK really saved my life in such an emergency situation and I am indebted to them. I thought I would never want to go through it again but here I am with a 13-month-old son and now feel I would love to give him a sibling and have another child. There are so many dilemmas and 'what ifs' involved it makes making a choice very hard indeed, despite the support from my husband. I am sure many HELLP sufferers have suffered similar feelings. Is there anyone with similar experience out there? Is there anyone who can give good advice? I really would like to talk to sufferers who have gone on to experience further children, with or without HELLP. I hear so many conflicting opinions here I really cannot make an informed choice about my, my sons, or my family's future. Hope you can offer some direction. Thanks again. It's so good to know you are there. If I can help the cause of the HELLP Syndrome Society here in the UK, I would be more than happy to give my time.
From Emily embolina10@cox.net (Kingston, RI) Hi. We moved! Maybe you could include this in the next newsletter so I can find my friends that I lost contact with? Thanks.... Editors Note: Emily & Tim, who delivered their baby Nicole at 32 weeks back in 1999 ( Salt Lake City, Utah), have lost contact with a few great members of the HELLP Syndrome Society...They are living in Southern Rhode Island now while her husband works on his Masters Degree at the University. They all are doing great. Nicole just started Kindergarten and is super tall and healthy and her baby brother who was born HELLP free, but not complication free, will be 3 in just a few short weeks! They'd love to hear from you as they are planning baby #3 and keeping their fingers crossed!
From Paula PaulaH@idt.org.za (Pretoria, South Africa) Hello. ANY PERMANENT AFTER-EFFECTS DUE TO HELLP SYNDROME? In 1995 I gave birth to my second child through c-section at 34 weeks to prevent HELLP syndrome from being fatal to me. Although I was hospitalized a week prior to my daughter's birth, I was only aware of high blood pressure problems. Only two weeks after the birth I was "matter-of-factly" informed that I was seriously ill. They spoke about my brain swelling or something of the sorts. Apparently the syndrome has a few stages and I went through all of them, up to the last stage start. I retained a lot of water, so much that after the emergency C-section I weighed 16 kilograms less than going into the theatre. The nursing staff did not even recognize me on my return from the intensive care unit (I lost a lot of blood - but refused to take a blood transfusion). At the time, I was not interested much in HELLP syndrome, since my daughter and I seemed to be fine after her initial two weeks in ICU. (She had some liver problems initially, and lost weight). Now, however, I am concerned that we might have suffered some brain damage, maybe due to a lack of oxygen, or something I cannot put my finger on. I would like to find out if other women, who also went through advanced stages of the syndrome, experience any symptoms similar to mine. My memory fails me often which I initially contributed to stress/age/ thyroid being under active etc. (I'm 34) Words are said in the wrong order, I fall over my tongue (slurred) speech. I cannot communicate properly, neither in my home language, nor in my second language (English). I forget words, sometimes even a simple word like airport. When I pronounce a word sometimes I have difficulty getting it right. Hearing deteriorated. I need to know whether I am barking up the wrong tree. It is a shot in the dark, but I need to find an answer. If it wasn't for the fact that my daughter shows the same symptoms I could contribute the symptoms to a variety of things. These problems only started after Verushka's birth.
