"...I pray that I get to Lamaze this time!!??..."

From Jennifer
waltke96@hotmail.com (Kalamazoo, MI) Hi there. My husband and I are expecting a baby girl, who we've decided to name Audrey, in March. I am currently 28 weeks along and feeling pretty good. I'm nervous as I know most of you who have been through HELLP before are. We lost our daughter Madison in September of 2001 at 23 weeks due to severe HELLP. I am feeling great that I've already made it 5 weeks further than last year. I am seeing a wonderful perinatology group and they put me on baby aspirin starting at 11 weeks. That's the only thing I'm doing differently other than being seen every two weeks and having frequent ultrasounds to check the blood flow through the cord. We are hoping and praying for a full-term, healthy baby girl and mommy!

tramajen@yahoo.com (Cheshire, England) I'm having my second baby. I'm 18 weeks and so far so good! My first baby, Katie, was born at 31 weeks with a variety of complications ending with me developing HELLP syndrome. Katie was 2lb 13 oz born and very healthy, thankfully. She is now three years of age and is still wonderful. We have been so blessed with Katie and we hope that second time around we'll be just as lucky. I'll keep you all posted on our progress. Our love to all the families

I have so many questions for the doctor this time!! At least, they know what to look for this time around. I pray that I get to Lamaze this time!!??

marilala@online.no(Norway) I wrote to you several months ago commenting on a possible effect of following a low glycemic diet for preventing reoccurrence of  HELLP. I fell pregnant shortly afterwards. Now I am 34 weeks pregnant and have been sticking to this way of eating ever since. Several people contacted me to ask for a diet sheet, but this is not that simple. All I could do is refer to lists of Glycemic Index used by diabetics. I also received several interesting articles and more information and I am most grateful for these. As I had HELLP in week 23, the risk for recurrence was considered high (approx 43%), as was the risk of preeclampsia and diabetes. I was put on baby aspirin from week 12.  I have been monitored weekly throughout. From week 24 I have been having Doppler scans and the blood flows indicate no signs of disease. I continue to avoid stress and follow my diet. This summer official Norwegian medical advice came out telling pregnant women that high sugar consumption greatly increases the risk of preeclampsia. Unfortunately, this ignored other carbohydrates with similar effect on the body. I take this to be an indication that I am on to something. At 34 weeks I keep astounding my doctors. I carry some excess weight from before and have thus far not gained any weight (lost some gained some). The baby's growth was measured to +1% two weeks ago so it is not suffering in any way. I am definitely not "dieting" but eating a lot differently.  My blood pressure is staying sensible. Last week it measured at 119/69. I have no signs of any edema. The only problem I am having (except nerves) is pelvic pain which is common in scandinavian women and which I am not too bothered about. Naturally I cannot with certainty say that my diet is the cause of this, bit I am definitely a believer and I feel like telling everyone! (who now dares to believe I will be HELLP free and have a living healthy sister to my little angel)
