The Northwest LDS Symphony, now in its 18th season, was founded by Colleen Tolva, its Principal Conductor for 10 years. The orchestra, with its 50 or so non-paid musicians from the greater Portland-Vancouver area, is open by audition to members of the Church and non-members alike. The current age range is from 16 to Senior Citizen. Many of the members had not picked up their instruments in decades before practicing to join. We perform 6 concerts each season including the Messiah with choir, and annually play for the Oregon Mother of the Year pageant. When asked why one might join the Northwest LDS Symphony, Brother Parks gives three reasons: First, because the Spirit of the Lord is there. Second, the Church encourages everyone to magnify their talents. Third, making beautiful music and new friendships bring greater joy to each member’s (and non-member’s) life.
