I'm no different from most travel shoppers, just a lot less patient with poorly designed or limited functionality travel sites.  Therefore I've listed some of the basic capabilities that should be available.  This page is also designed to serve as a guide for the many requests that I receive to review or link to other web sites.  If you are creating a web site and looking for my advice, if you don’t have the listed capabilities now or in the near future, don't bother to ask.

Air fare shopping sites must include:

bulletDepartures and destination that include near-by cities, preferably measured in drive-time rather than miles distance.

bulletAlternate dates of travel, plus or minus at least 3 days.

bulletThe results (fares) of all inquiries including near-by city-pair combinations and alternate dates must be clearly visible on the initial display from the first inquiry.

bulletThe ability to select individual flights rather than just whole trips.

bulletDisplay of results must include aircraft type and include a link to a seating chart or photo of the aircraft.

bulletAll results columns must be sortable.

bulletReal-time result filters (per flight) must immediately show the effects and include: total ticket price (including all fees/taxes), alternate dates, airline(s), departure time, arrival time, travel duration, drive-time to/from near-by cities, connecting cities, specific departure and destination cities, maximum number of stops, prop-planes, overnight flights, minimum and maximum connection times.

bulletWhen making multi-city trips, the system should offer the ability to price the trip using different city sequences and display the results of all possible combination on one results display.

bulletFor very flexible travelers, a search for a trip of various lengths (1 day to 6 months) must be available over a 60 day window.

Advanced thinking (if you really want to do air travel right):

Rather than use airport names for departure and destinations, use mapping software such as Google Maps or Google Earth to select the actual departure, intermediate, destination and return locations (home address, work address, remote factory/warehouse, hotel name, Zip code, etc.).  Include ground transportation time and cost (car, rail, shuttle, etc.) when displaying airfare results.  If ground time and cost is not available, allow the shopper to input it.  All inquiries and manually input ground time & cost should be retained for future use.
