Board Meeting Minutes for November 10, 1998

The board meeting was held at 7:00 PM, November 10, 1998.

In attendance:

Lloyd Gowen, President

Guy Moreau, Vice-President

Maury Ostroff, Treasurer

Benjamin Barrett, Secretary

Danny Swarzman, Member

Minutes from the previous meeting were accepted.

Treasurer’s Report: There are sufficient funds in the Club’s regular account to last until January, when most memberships come due.

Computer: A version of Quicken compatible with Windows 3.1 is needed to put the Club’s finances back onto the computer.

Labor Day Tournament: The reporting of scores has not yet been completed. Ben will try to get it finished up.

Professional Lessons and Events: There is an interest in holding simultaneous events and lessons as much as once per month. Lloyd will contact Zhu Jiu Jiang about possible lessons, and Ben will contact James Chien concerning future events.

Newsletter: The deadline for the next newsletter is November 25, to be published in the beginning of December. Suggestions to Danny Swarzman are welcomed. There is an issue concerning the large number of subscribers (over 600) and the cost used to produce and mail the newsletter. In return for carrying information about the Zhu Jiu Jiang Tournament, the Tournament will pay for one-half of postage expenses for the December edition. Danny and Ben will try to obtain more advertising, but help is needed.

Press Release: Press releases concerning the Go Club are being mailed this week to various newspapers.

Asian Art Museum: Elaine Connell, from the Asian Art Museum, has expressed an interest in promoting go in local high schools and offering the Museum for interscholastic tournaments. Lloyd has obtained enthusiastic help from the American Go Association and will be meeting with Elaine.

Annual Meeting: The annual meeting to elect the board will be held the Sunday before the Super Bowl, 1999.

Chinese New Year: The Chinatown New Years Community Street Fair will be held February 27 to 28, 1998 for the Year of the Hare. At a cost of $280, the Board decided to request a booth. People available to attend the booth should contact Ben.

Calendar of Events: In a gesture of accord for Northern California go, the Davis Sacramento Go Club has requested a schedule of events for 1999 so they might avoid conflicts. At present, the Go Club will have Chinese New Year event, the spring tourney, Cherry Blossom event and the Labor Day Tournament.

Photographs: As the painting is complete, pictures can be hung on the walls. Also, Danny will be running a series of articles about the history of the Club and will be scanning some of the photographs. They might also be used in a story the AGA will be writing about the Club for their spring edition.

Next Meeting: As the customary second Tuesday of the month is a distraction to the successful beginner’s lessons, the Board Meeting in December will be on the second Monday, December 7.
