Board Meeting Minutes for October 13, 1998

(Official)

The board meeting was held at 7:00 PM, October 13, 1998.

In attendance:

Lloyd Gowen, President

Guy Moreau, Vice-President

Benjamin Barrett, Secretary

Eric Eclor, Member

Danny Swarzman, Member

Minutes from the previous meeting were accepted.

Labor Day Tournament: At the Labor Day Tournament, it was not made clear that all people had to be AGA members or pay an additional five dollars to make the event an AGA-rated tournament. At the previous Board Meeting, it had been decided that the SF Go Club would pay the five dollars required for non-AGA members who had not paid. However, it had since been discovered that the AGA (American Go Association) membership list posted on the Internet is not up-to-date, causing further confusion as to who was a current member. At the present meeting, there was a question of whether to make the tournament non-AGA rated retroactively. It was decided that Ben would make best efforts to identify non-AGA members and remit the five dollars as originally planned.

1999 Go Congress: Due to general member and Club interest in the 1999 US Go Congress, which is an AGA event to be held in San Francisco, notices from the 1999 US Go Congress e-mail list will be kept in a notebook accessible at the Club.

Professional Lessons and Events: Jie Li, a professional player from China, will hold a simul (simultaneous) event at the Club October 25 starting at 2:30. All are welcome and players against Jie Li will be charged $10, with $50 going to Jie Li and any remainder going to (or deficit covered by) the Club.

With lessons on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for kyu players, there is a feeling that perhaps there is an inadequacy of activities of interest to dan players. Zhu Jiu Jiang (known also as “Jujo”), a local professional, has expressed an interest in teaching children go after school and perhaps a lesson or other event at the Club. Lloyd will continue dialog with him to organize an event, perhaps a monthly one, maybe alternating with Jie Li.

Name Tags: With another two members’ names, the name tags should be complete. Anyone noticing a lack of a name tag should contact Lloyd.

Newsletter: Danny is considering putting together a newsletter shortly. Due to the costs, this will require consent from the Board.

Next Meeting: The customary second Tuesday of the month is a distraction to the successful beginner’s lessons. The Officers will contact each other to establish a new night.
