Board Meeting Minutes for September 15, 1998
(Official)
The board meeting was held at 7:00 pm, September 15, 1998. Comments and suggestions received by telephone and e-mail were appreciated.
In attendance:
Lloyd Gowen, President
Guy Moreau, Vice-President
Maury Ostroff, Treasurer
Geof Syphers, Member-at-Large
Benjamin Barrett, Secretary
James Chien, Member
Minutes from the August 8, 1998 meeting were accepted.
Treasurer’s Report: (1) Deposit from old premises have not been received yet. Lloyd will contact the landlady. (2) Funds in the regular account may last through the end of the year. As many annual memberships are renewed between January and March, it may not be necessary to use any of the reserve fund.
Tax Status: No tax returns have been filed with the IRS for the past two years. After those are filed, the Board will further consider obtaining a 501.C.3 corporation status, enabling donations made to the Club to be tax-deductible.
Painting, Curtains and Fix-up: (1) A small bit on the outside of the building remains unfinished. Maurice will have temporary signs and design proposals for permanent signs this week. (2) Geof will complete the curtain hanging. (3) Lloyd will obtain an additional light fixture for the north portion of the room.
Computer: A laptop will be used for official Club business, leaving the other computer for go software, etc. The database will be expanded to include players’ ranks.
Labor Day Tournament: The Club profited $90 on the tournament. Some players who are not AGA members did not pay the $5 fee for rating, so the Club will reimburse the amount out of the earnings.
Banning Player: A request has been made that Ming Yuen Choy be banned from tournaments at the Go Club. The Board decided that action should be taken only if a problem affecting the Club arises. (Note: These minutes formerly stated incorrectly that Mark Okada wished Ming Yuen Choy be banned.)
1999 Go Congress: The 1999 Go Congress will be held at San Francisco State University (1600 Holloway Avenue). The Board feels assisting with local information and giving free teaching lessons to novices would be an appropriate level of official involvement with the event.
New Professional: Jie Li, a professional player from China, has recently come to San Francisco and teaches go at Berkeley. A tentative date of October 25 was set for a simultaneous match starring Mr. Li with one post-game analysis. Anyone wishing to play is welcome for a fee, which would benefit Mr. Li.
Palo Alto Club: The Palo Alto Club has moved to the American Ing GOE Foundation in Meno Park. Directions to the new site are in the Meeting Notes notebook and available at www.bueno.com/rich/go/pa_go.html.
Sales: It was decided that the selling of ramen and other snacks would require too much management and too little return.
Thursday Night Fees: There may be one or two people not coming because of the $5 fee on Thursday nights. It was decided that a case of hardship may be made and the fee waived if this is the case.
Nametags: A list was prepared of annual members (38 plus nine Friends) and members without name tags. Lloyd will make the needed name tags.
Volunteer Work: Someone is needed to carry on the t-shirt sales. There are also other tasks for which volunteer hands would be much appreciated. Interested parties can contact any Board member.
Next Meeting: The next meeting will be held October 13 at 7:00 pm.
